Performance Auditor
-
People at the Washington State Auditor’s Office (SAO) are committed to working together to make a real difference in how government operates. We consistently look for new ideas to ensure our audits are relevant and provide value to the people of Washington and the state and local governments that serve them. That means we are also looking for talented people to join our smart, creative and dedicated workforce.
Performance audits independently examine the performance and management of government programs and policies, seeking solutions to improve government services for all Washingtonians. SAO’s performance auditors often work at the forefront of public policy, conducting a wide variety of program evaluations and management reviews. Over time, our auditors develop knowledge about many areas of state government, from health care and education to transportation and financial management. As a result, staff gain broad exposure to policymakers and executives throughout state and local government.

Performance auditors on our team have a diverse set of skills and backgrounds, but all share certain characteristics: they are critical thinkers, curious, responsible and respectful of their colleagues and agency customers. They are good at spotting patterns in qualitative data and interpreting themes in research or interview responses. They also work well with others on their assigned team, can manage their own time and tasks, and can solve problems as they assist, develop, lead and conduct independent performance audits. While we have high expectations for the depth and quality of work, we are also able to manage our project schedules to sustain a healthy work/life balance. Performance auditors frequently have a particular expertise in areas such as data processing, quantitative analysis, fiscal management and related areas.
