“Always do right. This will gratify some people and astonish the rest.”
— Mark Twain
In one of Bill Watterson’s memorable Calvin and Hobbes strips, Calvin is asked in a school project whether it’s better to fail doing the right thing or succeed doing the wrong one. Pressed by Hobbes for his answer, Calvin admits he turned in a blank page—because cheating on an ethics test just felt wrong.
Public servants, however, face greater scrutiny than Calvin. They face real-life ethical crossroads—often where all choices may have consequences. In these moments, having a strong ethical compass is not just helpful, it’s essential.
Our speaker, Mark Quiner, has spent years speaking to public servants, universities, and civic leaders about what it means to lead an ethical life. In this engaging session, he will explore what ethical leadership looks like, how to build it, and what we should prioritize when making hard choices.
