EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR KINNEY POYNTER ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT
Section: NASACT

R. Kinney Poynter, longtime NASACT executive director, has announced that he will retire effective March 31, 2025.

He will be working closely with the Executive Committee and Deputy Executive Director Josh Winfrey on the transition in coming months. Winfrey will assume the role of executive director effective April 1, 2025.

“It has been an honor to be a part of the NASACT family for so long and to represent our members and their interests throughout the years. We’ve addressed many challenges along the way, and I look forward to the continued success of the association under Josh’s leadership,” said Poynter.

Poynter has been with NASACT since 1989. He became executive director in 2003, previously serving in roles including deputy director and director of the National State Auditors Association (NSAA). In his 34-year career with the association he has experienced monumental change to the industry of governmental financial management.

“Kinney will be greatly missed by the NASACT community. As a leader he has displayed unwavering commitment to the association’s mandates and to general intergovernmental cooperation at all levels,” said Idaho State Controller Brandon Woolf, current NASACT president. “On behalf of all NASACT’s members, I thank him for his service.”

Poynter has tirelessly championed the issues of government accountability, transparency, efficiency, and intergovernmental cooperation during his career with NASACT. Most recently he has been integral to coordination and collaboration among officials at the federal, state and local levels to provide oversight for unprecedented levels of pandemic-era funding.

“NASACT is such a respected voice of authority, fairness and accountability in large part because of Kinney’s contributions and his ability to adeptly steer a disparate group of state-level officials with such a vast array of responsibilities and interests,” commented Georgia State Auditor Greg Griffin, immediate past president of NASACT. “His retirement gives us all an opportunity to pause and reflect on his many accomplishments on behalf of the association.”

Poynter was recognized by NSAA in June 2024 with a William R. Snodgrass Distinguished Leadership Award for his contributions and leadership over the years. He is a respected national speaker and technical expert on a catalog of issues that seems to grow each year.

“I am thankful I’ve had the opportunity to work at NASACT for several years under Kinney’s leadership,” said Deputy Director Winfrey. “Working together with our dedicated team and NASACT’s leaders, I am confident we can continue his legacy of excellence.”
