2021 Annual Conference Recap
Section: NASACT




NASACT President and California State Auditor Elaine M. Howle, and conference co-hosts Controller Betty Yee and Treasurer Fiona Ma, welcomed over 400 members and friends to San Diego for the association's 106th annual conference. The conference was held 15-18 at the Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, and included meetings of NASACT's Executive Committee and the Committee on Accounting, Reporting and Auditing.

Technical Agenda & Other Activities

The conference featured six general sessions, with keynotes from Cali Williams Yost, founder and CEO of Flex+Strategy; Dan White from Moody's Analytics; John Sileo, cybersecurity and identity theft expert; and DEI expert Chelsea Williams. Attendees also heard from a panel of NASACT members on post-COVID workplace challenges and participated in our traditional member roundtable. With 27 concurrent sessions, the conference featured a wide range of topics of interest to state government financial management leaders. View the complete program here.

Four resolutions were approved at the conference during the annual business meeting:
  1. Thanking Elaine M. Howle for her service as NASACT President.
  2. Commending David R. Bean on his distinguished career and thanking him for his support and friendship over the years.
  3. Thanking our California hosts of the 2021 NASACT Annual Conference.
  4. Thanking Sherri L. Rowland for her years of service as an employee of NASACT.
Additionally, NASACT members elected a new Executive Committee.
 
 
Elaine Howle received a plaque of appreciation from incoming NASACT President Richard Eckstrom.   NASACT recognized the sixth class of Hall of Fame inductees.
 

Awards 

On Tuesday, August 17, three individuals were inducted into NASACT's Hall of Fame:
  • David R. Bean, former Director of Research and Technical Activities, Governmental Accounting Standards Board
  • James B. Lewis, former State Treasurer, New Mexico
  • David A. Vaudt, former Auditor of State of Iowa and former Chairman, Governmental Accounting Standards Board
In addition to announcing the new Hall of Fame inductees, President Howle announced several other awards:

Distinguished Service
  • Justin P. Wilson, Comptroller Emeritus, Tennessee
Special Recognition
  • Rob Hamilton, Controller, Oregon
  • James MacDonald, First Deputy Treasurer, Massachusetts
  • George Strudgeon, Audit Director, Virginia
President's Awards
  • Greg Griffin, State Auditor, Georgia
  • Brandon Woolf, State Controller, Idaho
  • Beth Pearce, State Treasurer, Vermont
