Established in 1989, A.L.G.A.'s growing
membership represents a diverse range of audit organizations-from
one-person shops to offices with more than 75 professionals. Though
A.L.G.A.'s membership is comprised mostly of appointed or elected
city, county and district auditors, associate membership is available
for state, federal and other audit professionals.
A.L.G.A. is recognized as a dynamic
industry leader, with officers and staff working to assist members
in excelling at local financial and performance audit efforts.
Local government auditors from across
the country face many of the same issues and challenges. A.L.G.A.
provides an avenue for these professionals to meet, communicate
and collaborate on important issues and uphold standards of best
industry practices.
Members receive a subscription to
the Local Government Auditing Quarterly, which explores important
government auditing issues and provides articles that share audit
findings and methodologies for public safety, social services,
revenues and other types of audits. An annual member directory
offers quick and easy access to other audit organizations, and
A.L.G.A.'s listserv and Web site distribute up-to-date, timely
information. Members also have access to publications and brochures
that promote local government auditing.
Each spring A.L.G.A.'s annual conference
brings members together for valuable training opportunities, continued
education sessions, and peer-to-peer networking experiences. Small
group discussions on issues specific to local government auditing
are combined with presentations from nationally recognized speakers.
Conferences are held in a different part of the country each year
to increase access for all members. Attendees have consistently
rated the A.L.G.A. annual conference as one of the most valuable
and cost effective learning experiences they receive each year.
Discounted registration is available for current A.L.G.A. members.
In order to comply with Government
Auditing Standards, audit organizations are required to have a
peer review at least every three years. A.L.G.A.'s Peer Review
Committee helps members gain compliance by providing its Quality
Control Review Guide, conducting peer reviews and coordinating
peer reviews at much lower costs than contracted reviews.
The work of N.A.L.G.A. members and
committees has a significant impact on professional issues affecting
the local government auditing environment. N.A.L.G.A. contributes
to the local government perspective on proposed revisions to Government
Auditing Standards and provides industry representation on emerging
issues.
